A little Monday inspiration for all of those expecting baby boys! It seems to be in the air. So many people I know have either just had a little boy or are expecting a boy. Are you?

A playroom is the perfect room to really think outside the box while decorating. It’s not the room to be scared of color, shoot for fun and imaginative! These simple concepts will lead to hours of playtime for your modern tot!
Before you get started, here are a few things to think of:
Storage, storage, storage!!! There is never enough storage for toys, games, and crafts. I personally prefer doors or cabinets to hide unused items.
Color! Get those paint brushes out and use your favorite color or colors to paint those walls. Chalk paint is also an excellent choice for playrooms. Paint is the most affordable way to redesign a room and give it a fresh, new look. Another great way to add splashes of color, throw pillows and floor cushions. Try large patterns and bold colors.
Get creative! This is a room for lots of imaginary play time. Think back to when you were a kid and go wild. I still remember to this day looking at a model home with my parents and I fell in love with the ballet bar in the “bonus room.” I wanted one SOOOO bad! I will also warn you not to go with a very specific theme because we all know kids have a new favorite by the week. Choose items that will grow with your kids, at least through the childhood years and general neutral colors and theme if your family is still expanding.
Here are a few inspirations to get you rolling….

I stumbled across a great article from Real Moms Guide, 5 Nursery Trends for Hip Moms, and thought I’d share it all with you!
Nursery décor has certainly come a long way from the standard pink stripes and Winnie the Pooh options of years past. From big to modest budgets the sky’s the limit for the type of room your precious bundle can slumber in. Here are five current trends in modern nursery design for hip moms (or for those of us who aspire to be).
Modern Chic
Many celebrities are incorporating a modern chic theme when designing their baby’s nursery. Tiffani Thiessen (or in my world, Kelly Kapowski) recently shared pictures of her daughter Harper’s nursery with People Magazine. How gorg is this nursery?
And if you’re wondering where she got her bedding from, you’ll have to hop on over to PetitNest– Thiessen’s new nursery décor collection she recently launched with her business partner Lonni Paul.
Retro
Many designers are blending a mix of retro style with the use of bold prints and color. I’m totally digging this 70’s flashback room with its pop of the colors green and orange by Jennifer Delonge. At first glance, you wouldn’t even guess it was a baby’s nursery (except, of course, for the cute little babe stretched out on the floor).
This nursery by Elizabeth Kimberly incorporates lime green with the use of natural-hued walls and flooring. Love it!
Neutrals
Want to create a serene and soothing atmosphere for your little one? Try using a neutral color palette like this nursery shared by Andrea King of Nursery Notations.
Eco-friendly
Like most other baby products, there are plenty of eco-friendly choices for the more environmentally-conscious mama. From mattresses to cribs to linens, practically every nursery item has an eco-friendly option. Here’s a sampling of some “greener” nursery items.

Organic Crib Sheeting from Pottery Barn Kids
Be sure to check out the VOC-free paint from The Land of Nod. There are over 60 different shades to choose from.
Wall Art
Gone are the days of choo-choo train borders, parents are using wall art as inspirational pieces in their baby’s room.
Here’s a creative way to showcase your family history with Family Tree Art from My Tree and Me: Modern Genealogy, it comes blank allowing you to fill-in the names by hand (don’t worry, they provide a practice copy as well).
A wall decal is a perfect option for those of us that are - ahem - artistically challenged, like this Birds on a Branch Decal from Amazon.
What about you? Are you loving or hating the current trends in nursery decor?
Head on over to The TomKat Studio for your chance to win some amazing items from fabulous vendors, all featured in Kate’s Barbie inspired birthday party! This includes 3 hanging tulle pom poms and 3 pom pom wands from Adisten’s Closet by Modern Chic Tots!

Mobiles don’t have to be cuddly bears clipped onto the side of the crib. Think outside the box! The purpose of a mobile is to give the baby a something bright and interesting to look at as they drift off to sleep. Why not make it a piece of art?! Just about anything that can be hung from the ceiling can be today’s modern mobile! Here are a few ideas…

There are so many unique, creative, and personal ways to decorate the walls of a nursery or children’s room! Groupings look fantastic and not every piece necessarily needs to go hand in hand. You can creatively mix mirrors, frames of different colors, shapes, and sizes, 3D art such as fabric or metal letters, framed children’s art work, family heirlooms, favorite pieces of art, swatches of coordinating fabrics, framed pages of your favorite childhood book…. the lists goes on and on. Whatever inspires you or any of your favorite things can make beautiful eye candy when placed in a collage of art. Below are some inspirational photos to get your brain in gear!

One of my favorite designers, the Oilo baby bedding has beautiful, modern patterns and colors. If Adisten had been a boy, I was all set on this crib set. I love the high, crisp contrast of navy and white. Classic. Sophisticated. Modern.

The newer designs are just as gorgeous! There are four options if you are looking for a neutral color palate: gray, taupe, and brown crib sets. Each just stunning and so versatile for either a baby boy or girl. You can stick with the monochromatic color scheme or you can throw in just about any accent color. Check these beautiful linens out!

Two other gender neutral color schemes- aqua and spring green

Inspiration can be found all around us, some times least expected and some times in the most obvious. I got the new summer Pottery Barn Kids magazine last week but it has taken me until this weekend to sit down and browse through. Let’s just say I am ready for summer and so wish I had a beach house(or even a lake house) to buy the adorable outdoor furniture for kids.

Looking for a mobile for the nursery? Try something a little different. Below, PBK created a grouping of decorative pendants mixed with some colorful poms. Remember, a mixture of different pendants and an odd number creates an interesting cluster and keeps the eye moving.

Here is another awesome mobile for a boy! I love the drift wood, it brings texture and warmth to the room.

I know I’ve blogged about this before but I just LOVE 3D wall art, particularly girly flowers. They can be added just about anywhere in the room! Design a whole wall or add some 3D fun to a small area like the changing table so baby has something interesting to look at.

I love organized rooms and love them even more with adorable containers marked specifically for it’s use. Check out the Enamel nursery Storage! They even come with wall brackets. These really should come in every color but the classic white and navy is very crisp and would work in most boy’s rooms.

This is another cute, personalized storage caddy for girls. It is huge(19″ wide x 13″ deep x 12″ high) and perfect for storing toys while also allowing easy access for baby or child.
